1
Prepare the Jalapeño Mayo: In a small bowl, mix together the mayo, diced jalapeño, and a squeeze of lemon. Set aside.
2
Toast the Bread and Melt the Cheese: Cut a piece of bread down the middle without slicing all the way through. Spread the jalapeño mayo on both sides of the bread. Place two types of cheese on one side of the bread and the remaining cheese on the other side. Pop the sandwich into a preheated oven at 400°F for about 7 minutes, or until the cheese melts and the bread is toasted.
3
Optional Step – Pan Fry the Deli Meats: While the sandwich is in the oven, optionally pan fry the ham and turkey to add an extra layer of flavor.
4
Assemble the Poboy: Remove the sandwich from the oven. Layer the ham and turkey on one side, then add the roast beef with gravy. Spread an additional layer of jalapeño mayo and top with shredded lettuce.
5
Serve: Cut the sandwich into portions if desired and serve immediately. Enjoy your hearty, loaded Poboy!
Commonly Asked Questions
Can I use different types of bread?
Absolutely! While Poboy bread or French bread is traditional, you can use a baguette, hoagie roll, or any other crusty bread you prefer.
How do I make the roast beef and gravy?
For the best results, use a homemade roast beef recipe or store-bought deli-style roast beef. Warm it up in a rich gravy before adding it to the sandwich.
Is there a substitute for jalapeño in the mayo?
If you prefer a milder flavor, substitute the jalapeño with diced pickles or pepperoncini for a tangy kick without the heat.
Can I make this sandwich in advance?
This sandwich is best enjoyed fresh. However, you can prep the jalapeño mayo and have all ingredients ready to assemble quickly.
What sides go well with this Poboy?
Classic sides like French fries, potato chips, or a simple salad pair perfectly with this hearty sandwich.
