How to Make Hamburger Steak & Onion Gravy
1
Prepare the Meat Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, and Montreal steak seasoning. Mix until just combined. Form the mixture into patties, aiming for 4 to 5 evenly sized portions.
2
Cook the Onion & Patties: In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Sauté the diced half of the onion until it’s soft and translucent. Add the hamburger patties to the skillet and brown them on both sides until they are mostly cooked through (about 3-4 minutes per side).
3
Make the Gravy: Add the beef gravy, cream of mushroom soup, Lipton onion soup mix, and sliced onions to the skillet with the patties. Add a splash of water to thin out the sauce if needed. Cover the skillet and let everything simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the flavors have melded together.
4
Serve: Once the dish is ready, sprinkle the green onions on top for a pop of freshness. Serve the hamburger steak and onion gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles for a delicious, comforting meal.
Commonly Asked Questions
Can I make the patties ahead of time?
Yes! You can prepare the meat patties a day in advance and store them in the fridge. When you’re ready to cook, just follow the instructions for browning and making the gravy.
What can I use instead of cream of mushroom soup?
You can substitute with cream of chicken or cream of celery soup. If you prefer a lighter option, use a combination of beef broth and sour cream.
How do I store leftovers?
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in a skillet over low heat, adding a bit of water or beef broth if the gravy thickens too much.
